Longueuil located in Quebec is a city with discrepant history. On the one part its settlement has already been existing for a few centuries, but on the other the city of Longueuil was born a few years ago. In 2002 the municipalities around Longueuil were merged to form the city of Longueuil. Today’s Longueuil is situated on the southern shore of the powerful St. Lawrence River. In 1874 Longueuil had hot the status of town and in 1920 it became a city. Famous musician Paul Pratt was the city mayor at 1935 – 1966. The territory of Longueuil was changed for a few times. In 1961 it was merged to Montréal-Sud, and then in 1969 its area was united with Ville Jacques-Cartier. Regardless of these merging Longueuil has saved its own municipality. January 1, 2002 was the official date of merging Longueuil with Brossard, LeMoyne, Saint-Hubert, Boucherville, Greenfield Park, Saint-Lambert and Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville. However in 2006 four of these municipalities were demerged to become separate cities. These were Saint-Lambert, Boucherville, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Brossard. That is why today’s Longueuil consists of four former cities: Longueuil, Greenfield Park, Saint-Hubert and LeMoyne. Longueuil thanks for its name Charles Le Moyne who was the local lord since 1657 till 1685 named the city in honour of his homeland village located at Dieppe. The French spelling of the name is "Longueil" and according to rumors lord was mistaken when spelling it “Longueuil”.
